Implement New Laws Recognizing the Roles and Rights of Stepparents in Blended Families Who
The Issue
- Stepparents who are the main care givers but who don’t hold PR -
I stand before you as a voice from within our community – a stepmother, the main caregiver to my 10 -year-old stepdaughter, wife to her father for an admirable nine years, and a mother to our two shared children. My husband and I have been the primary parental figures in our daughter's life since she was three years old. Despite our ongoing responsibility and commitment, the current system blinds itself to the rights and roles of step-parents in blended families.
For many in similar situations, emotional distress is an unwelcome resident in our lives. Sadly, our stories aren't widely heard, and our pain is easily forgotten in a society that is yet to fully recognise and understand the complexities of blended family dynamics. The legal system often disregards that stepparents, too, develop bonds of love and care.
It's just not the emotional aspect where the law falls short. Financially too, the current structure leans heavily on biological parents, sometimes overlooking stepparents' voluntarily taken financial duties.
The truth of the matter cannot be clearer; stepparents' rights matter. Our responsibilities and the nurturing bonds we have developed with our stepchildren should be acknowledged and protected by the law. This isn't an isolated reality, either. We believe that humane legislation would place the child's best interests first, recognizing not just biological ties, but also the reality of who consistently provides care and emotional support.
This cry is a call to action - for our lawmakers, our communities, and our fellow citizens. We want new legislation that adequately recognizes the emotional, financial and parental roles and rights of stepparents in blended families to be encompassed within our judicial systems.
We are part of over 70,000 blended families that continually grow each year, most ending 2-5 years along with a 70% chance of divorce. Stepparents, who deeply care for and uphold the wellbeing of their stepchildren, should have a voice.
Our laws currently neglect blended families. They fail to acknowledge the critical role stepparents play in a child's upbringing. This lack of empathy towards stepparents and the rights they should have is alarming. It is time to change this narrative and to acknowledge stepparents as family members, not outsiders.
We propose that stepparents should hold parental responsibility for their stepchildren until they reach 16 years of age. In cases of the blended family's breakdown, rights and responsibilities should be automatically removed from the stepparent depending on the families circumstances.
