Implement More School Recycling Programs

The Issue

When you look around almost any school you will see trash can after trash can. Yet, it is very rare to find a recycling bin. Schools produce large amounts of waste every day and nearly three quarters of it is recyclable in some way, but the majority of it ends up in landfills due to a lack of recycling programs in schools. This does not have to be the case. A quarter of school waste consists of recyclable paper that could be easily recycled by simply adding recycling bins to classrooms and having students put their old papers in them. Doing this would help bring the number of trees being cut down in order to produce paper lower. An additional fifty percent of school waste is comprised of non recyclable paper and food waste. These could be used to make compost which schools could then use to make school or community gardens. These gardens could be both a great source of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as an engaging educational experience for their students. Bringing more recycling to schools could help reduce deforestation, reduce the amount of trash in landfills, and help educate students from a young age on the importance of recycling as well as environmental responsibility. Recycling programs in schools would have an overwhelmingly positive effect on schools and their communities, but action needs to be taken in order to achieve them.
