Implement Measures to Protect Lakeside Estate Residents from Dangerous Dog

The Issue

We are concerned citizens of the Lakeside Estate in Scunthorpe. Like many families and estates around the world, many of us have wonderful dogs and pets, and children who love their furry family members.

The wellbeing of our community and its residents is under threat by a dangerous dog which, to date, has attacked multiple dogs and even caused the fatality of a treasured family pet which destroyed a child’s innocence. Members of our community have been verbally and physically attacked by it's owner, who has gone as far as "purchasing" personal data from the electoral roll and threatening the person concerned. Residents voice their concern daily, worrying for their pets and their people - children and adults alike. Concern continues to grow as the irresponsible owner allows the dog to roam off lead and without a muzzle, and verbally attacks and threatens people when the dog attacks another. The owner continues to deny any responsibility.

Tragically, despite the ongoing distress the situation is causing to residents and the harm inflicted on our pets, the police say they will only step in if the dog attacks a human. This is alarming and causing further distress considering that every year in the UK approximately 2,000 people are admitted to hospital with dog-bite-related injuries, with children aged 0-9 being most at risk (source: NHS Digital). No one wants it to be their child who gets attacked and want the police to enforce the law on dangerous dogs out of control in any spaces which falls under section 3 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. An act our tax payer funded police force is responsible for enforcing.

Without intervention, there is genuine fear. It isn't a case of "if" but "when". As residents, we cannot simply wait for more severe incidents to happen before the police enforce the laws they are meant to uphold. It's high time that our neighbourhood is safe for all its residents, including our beloved pets.

Please join us in calling upon the local council and law enforcement agencies in Scunthorpe to take immediate action, not just when humans are attacked, but proactively to prevent further assaults by this dangerous dog.

Sign this petition to stand for the safety of our community and insist upon an immediate investigation and action. Make Lakeside Estate safe for everyone!
