Implement Mandatory Two-Day Menstrual Leave Policy for Women

The Issue

This petition was sparked by personal experiences, highlighting the often overlooked struggles many women undergo. For many women, the first two days of their menstrual cycle are incredibly uncomfortable, sometimes even unbearable. None of us chose to have this monthly ordeal, yet the world keeps turning as if it's not happening. It is high time that employers recognize and accommodate this natural biological process.

Seven countries, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Zambia, have already responded by enabling laws that allow women to take paid leave during their periods. In the UK, a study showed that 90% of women had missed work due to period-related symptoms but only 27% told their bosses the truth about why they were taking leave ("Menstrual leave: a workplace reform that's more radical than you think”, the Guardian, 9 June, 2019).

In addition to discomfort and pain, women often face additional challenges including difficulty in concentrating, interference with daily activities, and diminished overall productivity. Regularizing menstrual leave could not only relieve women but also increase overall effectiveness and productivity of several sectors.

We implore employers across the globe to be proactive in acknowledging this reality and implementing a two-day mandatory menstrual leave policy. Please, sign and share this petition to compel workplaces to take action on this crucial matter.
