Implement Mandatory SEL Courses in Richmond Public High Schools

The Issue

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is an integral aspect of education that promotes the understanding and management of emotions, fostering positive attitudes towards oneself, others, and the society at large. However, Richmond public high schools do not currently mandate SEL courses, depriving students of these essential life skills.

There is evidence supporting the effectiveness of SEL. According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), SEL interventions increased students' academic performance by 11 percentile points on average. Furthermore, a longitudinal study conducted by the American Journal of Public Health found that SEL skills in kindergarten lead to improved outcomes in education, employment, criminal activity, substance use, and mental health by early adulthood.

Therefore, we urge the Richmond Public High School district officials to mandate SEL courses from kindergarten through 12th grade. This will prepare our children for real-world challenges, boost their academic performance, foster positive social behavior, and promote mental health. Sign this petition to advocate for the institution of mandatory SEL courses in all Richmond public high schools.
