All across Henrico County, middle and high school students are spending the majority of their school day in classrooms with limited opportunities for physical activity and mental relaxation. Academic pressure and physical inactivity can lead to stress, burnout, and overall decline in students' mental health. Studies have shown the importance of regular breaks for children's cognitive functioning and emotional well-being (American Academy of Pediatrics). We propose a necessary adjustment to current school schedules to mandate recess across all middle and high schools in Henrico county. Every student deserves the opportunity to unwind, socialize, and partake in physical activity during the school day. A brief break can improve focus, productivity, and mood, benefiting both the students and the learning environment.
