Implement Mandatory Microchip Scanning for Animals in Kentucky Vet Clinics

The Issue

Our hearts were shattered when our two beloved French bulldogs went missing. The pain was unbearable, especially upon discovering the shocking truth that our local Kentucky vets do not automatically scan animals for microchips. The reality is, anyone can take your beloved pet to a vet and there's a chance they may not be scanned for a microchip, denying rightful owners the chance to be reunited with their furry family member.

Kentucky’s lack of a mandatory microchip scanning policy is an overlooked issue that brings unforeseen heartbreak to many families. According to the American Humane Society, over 10 million pets are lost each year and microchips are vital in ensuring they find their way back home. In 2017 alone, microchips helped reunite more than 15,000 lost pets to their owners.

We believe that making it compulsory for veterinary clinics to scan every pet that comes through their doors is the only way to significantly reduce this heartbreaking statistic. This will not only minimize the risk of lost pets being passed onto new owners unknowingly, but it will also greatly improve the efficacy of pet microchip technology — a step we believe is paramount in creating a more responsible pet ownership culture in Kentucky.

We urge our lawmakers and regulatory bodies to enact legislation requiring all veterinary facilities in Kentucky to scan each and every animal on their first visit and at any subsequent visits.

Join us in urging our legislators to implement this key change and return our beloved pets back to their families, where they belong. Sign our petition now!
