As a student from Smyrna, GA, I am compelled to present this plea because I do not always feel safe in my school. The frightening reality is that school shootings occur far more regularly than we want to admit. I strongly believe that our safety should not be a matter of debate. It is time we took tangible measures to protect our students. Therefore, I propose the mandatory installation of metal detectors in most, if not all, high schools.

School shootings have become an unwelcome yet consistent fixture of American life. For instance, according to the Center for Homeland Security & Preparedness, there were 37 school shootings in 2019 alone! What's more disturbing is that schools are increasingly perceived as soft targets by perpetrators of these heinous crimes (Federal Bureau of Investigation). This should serve as an urgent call to action.

Installing metal detectors in schools creates an additional layer of security. Schools in urban areas that have already implemented this measure have seen a decrease in weapon-related incidents (National Center for Education Statistics). We need this kind of proactive step to ensure our students can learn in a safe and nurturing environment.

This petition is not only about securing our physical safety. It is also about restoring our peace of mind. When we walk into our schools, we shouldn't have to be burdened with constant fear. We should focus on learning, personal growth, and creating lasting memories – not worrying about whether we'll be safe in our own classrooms.
