As a former participant in Greek Life at the University of South Florida, I along with many others, have witnessed or heard of instances where LGBTQ+ individuals have felt excluded or uncomfortable in the predominantly heteronormative culture of fraternities and sororities. These experiences should not define anyone's journey within Greek Life.

Recent studies show that LGBTQ+ students in the US are 36% less likely to participate in Greek Life than their heterosexual, cisgender peers (2019 Campus Pride Index). This disparity is concerning, highlighting the urgent need for action to eradicate this stigma and build a more inclusive environment within Greek Life institutions.

Incorporating mandatory LGBTQ+ inclusivity training for all Greek Life executive members can subsequently create a ripple effect. It ensures that the institutions which boast diversity actually reflect it at all levels. This training would consist of creating an understanding of various sexual orientations and gender identities, dismantling harmful stereotypes, and fostering an environment of acceptance and respect.

We must strive to make Greek Life a better, more inclusive experience for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It's time Greek Life leadership takes responsibility for fostering this inclusivity at a structural level, signifying a commitment to every individual who is part of or aims to be part of these celebrated institutions.
