Implement Mandatory Brush Clearance and Bury Power Lines in Laurel Canyon

The Issue

I, like so many others, cherish Laurel Canyon, our community that embraces Fryman Canyon Park. However, the threat of wildfires due to overgrown vegetation and above ground power lines is a constant worry, putting our homes and lives at risk. It is crucial that we introduce measures to protect our beloved park and community.

California's fire season has grown longer and increasingly disastrous, primarily driven by dry conditions, strong winds, and the abundance of fuel in our wildlands. According to CAL FIRE, more than 4 million acres across California were burned in 2020, a record in the state's fire history (Source: CAL FIRE).

Of particular peril is the combination of overgrown vegetation and overhead power lines. A study conducted by the California Public Utilities Commission in 2020 found that power lines, often damaged during high winds, were a leading cause of wildfires across the state (Source: California Public Utilities Commission).

To mitigate these risks and protect our community, we need to demand the City Council in our county to enact a regulation requiring mandatory brush clearance in Fryman Park and the surrounding area. It's also important that all electrical wires in the park and our community are buried underground.

These steps are crucial in order to protect and preserve the park, its wildlife, and the residents of Laurel Canyon against the increasing threat of wildfires. We call on local authorities and park management to prioritize these actions to safeguard our community and beloved park. Please sign our petition to have these essential safety measures put in place.
