As a concerned citizen, I am deeply troubled by the unrestricted access children under the age of 13 have to social media platforms. These platforms often contain content that is inappropriate and potentially harmful for young minds that are not yet ready to process such information. It's alarming to note that according to a study by Ofcom, over 50% of children aged between 9-12 have their own social media profiles (Ofcom's Children and Parents Media Use and Attitudes Report, 2019). This is despite most social media platforms stating in their terms of service that users must be at least 13 years old.

The lack of effective age verification mechanisms allows children easy access to these sites, exposing them prematurely to adult content and potential online predators. We cannot stand by while our children's mental health and safety are at risk.

We call upon all major social media companies to implement mandatory age verification measures for users under the age of 13. This will ensure they are protected from content beyond their comprehension level and safeguard them from potential dangers lurking on these platforms.
