The Issue

For years, I have felt that the proficiency scale used in sd42 is like a pity system. As a student who experienced it first-hand, I could be on the brink of failing yet still receive a 'developing' mark to make me feel better about my progress, or have my work close to being proficient but see it categorized beneath the same nebulous label. It is frustrating to see two students, who are dramatically different in terms of their capabilities and areas for improvement, lumped under the same ambiguous term.

In the current system, letter grades and percentages are only provided to students from grades 10 to 12. However, students in grades 8 and 9, critical years for academic foundations, are left behind. These students find themselves grappling with the vague and broad evaluations of a proficiency scale, and they struggle to gauge precisely how much improvement is needed.

A letter grade and percentage system provides a clear, quantitative measure of a student's work. It allows for an objective understanding of their standing and clearly delineates the gap between their current level and their academic goals. This change could drastically enhance the way younger students perceive and engage with their learning, offering them a concrete understanding that fuels a more focused effort in their academic journey.

Moreover, research shows that clear and detailed feedback can significantly improve student performance. According to an educational study published in the "Journal of Learning Sciences," providing clear, concise, and usable feedback is associated with improved academic achievement. By adopting letter grades earlier, educators would provide students with more actionable feedback, tailored guidance, and an opportunity to track progress more effectively.

We propose that sd42 extend the provision of letter grades and percentages to include students from grade 8 onwards. This will not only aid students in understanding their strengths and weaknesses but also prepare them for the rigorous academic and personal challenges that lie ahead. Adapting to such a system can bridge the gap currently present in our educational evaluation and set students on a definitive path to success.

Join me in calling on sd42 to reform this essential part of our educational framework. By doing so, we can ensure that every student's learning experience is enriched with the clarity and understanding they rightfully deserve. Please sign this petition to demand change for a more transparent and effective grading system from grade 8.
