Implement Legislation to Prevent Felons from Serving as President

Implement Legislation to Prevent Felons from Serving as President

The Issue

This petition is drawn from a deeply personal belief that individuals with a criminal past should not be entrusted with the responsibility to run our country. It stems from the conviction that people with felonies, who in many cases are not even permitted to vote or secure employment due to their record, should not be eligible for the highest post of the nation.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, as of August 2021, over 156,000 people are serving time for felony convictions in the United States. Convicted felons often face societal barriers even after serving their time, particularly in areas like voting and employment. However, amazingly, they can legally run for and serve as President of the United States under current law. This is a disconcerting loophole that requires immediate attention.

A Pew Research study showed that in 2016, an estimated 6.09 million individuals were disenfranchised due to a felony conviction, a figure that comprises about 2.5% of the US voting-age population. These individuals are denied a critical role in our democratic process, yet the law does not explicitly prohibit a felon from serving as President.

This petition demands the U.S. government to amend the law and make it illegal for a person convicted of a felony to serve as President. It is a matter of fundamental fairness and societal integrity. If a felon can't vote or frequently struggle to find work because of their criminal status, common sense suggests they should not be able to take on the most powerful role in the land.
