Implement Legislation to Ensure End-of-life Companionship Rights in Healthcare Facilities

The Issue

During the Covid-19 pandemic, some people I knew through social media had to endure the heart-wrenching experience of watching their loved ones die through windows, virtual screens, or worse, hearing the news over impersonal messages. Can you imagine the agony of not being able to hold a loved one's hand, tell them you love them, and say your last goodbyes in their final hours? It's not just sorrowful. It's inhumane.

In the wake of the Covid-19 restrictions, many patients in Kentucky, like the rest of the United States, were denied the right to have a loved one by their side during their final moments. Research from 'The New England Journal of Medicine' showed that the lack of visitors may have contributed to increased rates of delirium among hospitalized patients. The absence of comfort and company can make their last journey much more painful and lonely.

Now is the time to challenge this and ensure that it never happens again. We request the Kentucky state government to pass legislation that ensures end-of-life companionship rights in hospitals and nursing homes. We urge the authorities to guarantee that no one dies alone in a healthcare facility again because everyone deserves the right to say their last goodbyes with dignity.

This is a plea from the thousands of Kentucky state residents who believe in compassion, empathy, and humanity. We encourage you to join us in challenging this injustice and restoring warmth to the last moments of life. Please sign our petition to make a difference.
