I have witnessed firsthand the painful effects of slander. Too many people in our communities are being called awful names that have far-reaching and serious consequences. It's not just about hurting feelings; these false and damaging statements can harm reputations, exacerbate mental health issues, and even damage career prospects. All this contributes to a damaging culture whereby speech morphs from a fundamental right to an instrument of harm.

Sadly, Scotland does not currently have sufficient laws in place to deal with slander, leaving many affected individuals with virtually no recourse. In contrast, England and Wales have long had defamation legislation to protect their citizens, proof that legal remedies for this issue are not only feasible but effective.

We must convince the Scottish Parliament to pass comprehensive legislation against slander. By doing this, we can ensure equal protection for all individuals in Scotland, built on respect and dignity.
