Implement laws to penalise dangerous cycling

Implement laws to penalise dangerous cycling
The Issue
In August of 2023, I experienced firsthand the devastating consequences of a cyclist riding recklessly through a red light. That incident not only disrupted my life, leading to wrongful accusations and the prospect of severe penalties, but also resulted in the tragic loss of a cyclist's life. This deeply traumatic experience has left me grappling with immense emotional turmoil, further compounded by the fear of losing my job, my driver's licence, and facing possible imprisonment. It has taken months of counselling to begin to heal from this, yet every day, I am reminded of how preventable it could have been.
The issue at hand is not isolated. Cyclists violating road rules, such as running red lights, riding without proper illumination, and negligently cutting in front of larger vehicles, pose a significant safety hazard not only to themselves but to pedestrians, motorists, and public transport operators. Statistics from the UK Department for Transport highlight that a startling percentage of cycling accidents are caused by such negligent behaviour. In 2020 alone, 16,287 reported casualties involved cyclists, with thousands of those incidents stemming from dangerous cycling actions.
For the safety and harmony of all road users, it is imperative that we take decisive action. I propose the creation and strict enforcement of legislation mandating penalties for cyclists who engage in dangerous behaviours. Similar to laws that exist for motorists, such regulations would include fines, cycling bans, or mandatory safety courses for offenders.
Implementing these measures can help reduce accidents, save lives, and relieve the emotional and legal strains placed on innocent drivers and pedestrians alike. Such initiatives have been successfully enacted in other European cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen, where cyclists must adhere to strict traffic laws, resulting in decreased accidents and a more harmonious shared use of road spaces.
I urgently call upon the government and local police authorities to address this pressing issue by establishing clear laws and consequences for cyclists who choose to disregard their responsibilities on the road. By doing so, we can ensure safer communities and prevent future tragedies.
Please sign this petition to make our roads safer and hold reckless cyclists accountable for their actions.
