Implement Later Start Times for Schools

Implement Later Start Times for Schools
The Issue
As someone who has personally witnessed the struggle of waking up early for school, I can attest to the negative impact it has on students' health and academic performance. Many of us have trouble falling asleep at night, only to be rudely awakened by an alarm clock hours before our bodies are ready. This is not just a personal observation - research supports this view as well.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, teenagers are biologically programmed to go to sleep and wake up later than adults. Early school start times conflict with this biological rhythm, leading to chronic sleep deprivation among adolescents (American Academy of Pediatrics). Additionally, a study published in Nature and Science of Sleep found that later school start times were associated with significant improvements in attendance rates, grade point averages, and standardized test scores.
The current early start time is detrimental not only for our physical health but also for our mental well-being and academic success. It's time we prioritize student health over outdated traditions. By pushing back the start time by even an hour or two could make a world of difference in students' lives.
Please sign this petition if you believe in implementing later school start times for better student welfare.
