Implement Later Start Times for Middle School

The Issue

I am personally moved to address this urgent issue as I have witnessed the devastating effects of sleep deprivation on middle school children—children who are compelled to begin school at an early hour despite their late bedtimes. Many of these children go to bed later than their younger, elementary school counterparts and are required to start their school day even earlier. The toll this takes on their well-being is frightening.

Sleep deprivation is more than just tiredness—it can lead to serious physical and mental harm. Draining energy, undermining cognitive processes, and triggering depression are just a few of the perils it imposes. Tragically, I know some individuals who have even entertained suicidal thoughts due to the depression triggered by their lack of sleep.

Scientific research aligns with these personal experiences. For instance, a study published on the National Sleep Foundation's website states that adolescents who don't get enough sleep often suffer from physical and mental health problems, an increased risk of automobile accidents, and a decline in academic performance
