Implement Later School Start Times at 9:30 AM

The Issue

As a student forced to wake up for a 7:20 AM school start time, I, along with my fellow students, struggle daily with sleep deprivation. This has been my daily reality for the past three years and it's a reality shared by many others. Our current early school starting time deprives teenagers of invaluable rest, hindering their cognitive functioning and reaction times. Adopting a later school start time could rectify this issue. Nudging the high school starting time to 9:30 am might seem like a minor change, but it can have a profound impact on learning and overall well-being. Research from the CDC suggests that starting school at 8:30 am or later can help adolescents get the recommended amount of sleep on school nights: about 8.5 to 9.5 hours (Source: CDC). Push this an hour later, to 9:30 am, and the benefits may be even greater. Enough rest boosts our alertness, facilitates cognitive processing, and enhances our mood—making us not just more efficient learners, but healthier individuals as well. It's not just students who will benefit. It trickles down to teachers, who can conduct classes to more receptive, well-rested students. There is more research that supports this, showing that later school start times align better with teenagers' natural sleep-wake cycles. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, delaying school start times could help reduce sleep deprivation in teens, improve their academic performance, and even lower risks of mental health issues (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2017). By moving our high school starting time to 9:30 AM, we would be making a clear statement about the importance we place on student health and educational efficacy. If you're a student, parent, educator, or simply someone who cares about our youth's well-being, please join us in our fight. Let's prioritize our students' health and education. This isn't a luxury, it's a necessity— a small change for a huge gain. If middle schools can start implementing their start time to 9:00 AM in the next school year, so can our high schools! We seek your support as we call on our local education officials to consider and implement this shift in school start times. Please sign this petition to help high school students and teachers receive the rest they need to perform their best. Together, we can redefine the narrative for healthier schooling hours.
