In the wake of an alarming road rage death toll, it is crucial for Illinois to take immediate action and implement a "Last Lane for Passing Only" sign on expressways. This simple yet effective measure can significantly reduce incidents of road rage and create safer driving conditions for everyone.

As an experienced driver with over 35 years on the roads, I have personally witnessed countless instances where individuals enter the expressway and immediately move into the last lane, only to slow down traffic by engaging in distracting activities such as using their cellphones. While speed limits exist, they cannot dictate someone else's urgency or impatience. Moreover, it is these individuals who would be liable to receive a ticket if caught violating traffic laws.

To support this petition's cause, let us consider some relevant facts and statistics:

1. According to a study conducted by AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (2016), aggressive driving behaviors contribute to over half of all fatal crashes.
2. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that approximately 66% of traffic fatalities are caused by aggressive driving.
3. A survey conducted by The Zebra (2020) found that Illinois ranks among the top ten states with the highest rates of road rage incidents.

By implementing a "Last Lane for Passing Only" sign in Illinois, we can address this issue head-on and promote safer driving habits among motorists.
