Implement Juneteenth as a Recognized Federal Holiday at UnitedHealth Group
The Issue
I am a dedicated and concerned employee who values the principles and culture of UnitedHealth Group. As we strive to live by our core values, I want to address the current approach to observing Juneteenth and suggest a path that aligns more closely with our commitment to equality, respect, and inclusion.
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is a significant day in American history, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It's often referred to as our second Independence Day. This day holds profound meaning, as it marks when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865—a moment when the United States could truly begin to consider itself a free country.
In 2021, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law, making Juneteenth a federal holiday. This recognition underscores the importance of the day and its place in our national history.
UnitedHealth Group has taken positive steps by allowing employees to utilize a floating holiday to our discretion. While this is a commendable start, I believe there is an opportunity to further align this observance with our company's values and commitments. Observing Juneteenth as a federal holiday would demonstrate integrity by recognizing the importance of this day, show compassion for the history and struggles of African Americans, embrace inclusion by supporting the diverse fabric of our workforce, strengthen relationships through mutual respect and understanding, foster innovation by leading with progressive policies, and uphold performance by ensuring our actions match our stated values.
All 50 states and the District of Columbia recognize Juneteenth as a holiday or observance, and at least 28 states and the District of Columbia have designated Juneteenth as a permanent paid and/or legal holiday through legislation or executive action, according to the Congressional Research Service, and it is high time organizations like ours follow suit. It's a matter of recognition and respect—not only for the rich history of our country but also for the diverse individuals who make up our workforce.
I urge UnitedHealth Group to honor Juneteenth as a paid holiday and give it the same status as July 4th. For those who choose to work that day, additional pay should be provided as a manifestation of gratitude for their service. It's about granting Juneteenth the full recognition it deserves.
Let's fight for justice, for recognition, and for equality. Stand with me in calling for UnitedHealth Group to recognize Juneteenth as the significant holiday it truly is. Please, lend your voice and sign this petition today.
