Implement Johns Law to Reform Cuyahoga County's Juvenile Court System

Implement Johns Law to Reform Cuyahoga County's Juvenile Court System

The Issue

My personal battle for custody against a powerful opponent who refuses to co-parent or collaborate has opened my eyes to the severe imbalances in our current juvenile court system. This battle has shone a light on how families are often torn apart, rather than united, due to a lack of resources and support. However, a change is possible: John's Law. This comprehensive reform seeks to transform Cuyahoga County’s juvenile justice system and set a precedent we hope others will follow.

John's Law calls for the inclusion of social workers as Guardian ad Litems, making co-parenting training compulsory, implementing family support coaches, and requiring trauma-informed and racial equity training for staff. It also envisions specialized units for families with special needs and encourages public input to ensure continuous improvement. If implemented, families like mine could focus more on protecting and caring for their children, rather than battling systemic problems.

Nationwide, 2.7 million children have a parent in jail or prison at any given time. Exposure to conflict and uncertainty can be traumatic and result in long-term damage for children. Implementing Johns Law, which includes mandatory co-parenting training, trauma-informed care, and family support, will provide the much-needed balance and resources for impacted families in Cuyahoga County.
