Implement "Jack's Law" to remove Knives from our streets in Victoria

Implement "Jack's Law" to remove Knives from our streets in Victoria
The issue
Give Victorian police the powers they need to get knives off our streets.
What is Jack's Law?
Jack’s Law, originally enacted in Queensland, to empower police with the ability to conduct warrantless weapon searches using handheld metal detectors ("wanding") in designated public areas.
Jack Beasley, a 17-year-old who was fatally stabbed in 2019. His legacy lives on through the Jack Beasley Foundation, which has successfully advocated for laws that have removed over 1,200 weapons from Queensland streets and significantly improved public safety.
Why Victoria Needs Jack’s Law:
- Knife-related violence is rising in our communities, particularly among youth.
- Current laws do not provide police with sufficient proactive powers to prevent attacks before they happen.
- Similar laws have already been adopted in Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory.
- Victoria’s recent expansion of search powers is a step forward, but Jack’s Law offers a proven, targeted, and community-supported model for reducing knife crime.
What We Are Asking:
- That the Victorian Government adopt legislation similar to Jack’s Law, allowing police to use wanding in public spaces such as transport hubs, shopping centres, and entertainment precincts.
- That this law be accompanied by education programs in schools, modeled on the Jack Beasley Foundation’s One Moment Program, to address the root causes of youth violence.
We believe this law will save lives, protect families, and make Victoria a safer place for all.
Please support the implementation of Jack’s Law in Victoria.
