The Issue

My younger brother, an inmate at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, CA, informed me of the appalling conditions of the prison's water supply. He reported cloudy, unpleasant-tasting water that’s being served to the inmates. Supposedly, posters around the facility claim that bottled water is being provided, but this is a blatant falsehood according to direct inmate reports.

Inmates, regardless of their situation, have the basic human right to clean and safe water. However, the current state of affairs at Mule Creek State Prison is contrary to this fundamental necessity, potentially placing inmates’ health at risk. Poor water quality can lead to serious health issues, such as gastrointestinal illnesses, skin rashes, or worse.

We demand immediate action to improve the water quality at the prison. The administration should organize regular water testing every month and make the results publicly accessible online to ensure transparency. Furthermore, a routine health check on inmates should be implemented for possible contamination due to the prolonged consumption of low-quality water.

This is not just about the quality of water but the dignity, health, and human rights of people who are incarcerated at Mule Creek State Prison.
