The Issue

As a concerned member of our community, and a parent whose children utilize the walkway every school day, I have experienced first-hand the hazards posed by the poorly maintained pathway from Karl Wente park up to Sunset Elementary School's back gate. Our precious little ones walk, bike, skate and scooter their way to school on an uneven, cracked and extremely rocky path that has shown itself to be a safety hazard.

I have personally witnessed several accidents over the course of the 2024-25 school year resulting from the rough terrain. Both parents and children alike have fallen, causing not just physical harm, but psychological distress as well. The sight of their parents struggling and getting hurt has terrified many students. Not to mention, the new moms in our community who have the added difficulty of pushing strollers over these rocky upheavals.

Every day, dozens of families use this pathway as a vital link to the school. The current state of disrepair seriously compromises the safety of our children and has a direct impact on their daily lives. Don't we owe it to them to provide a safe journey to school?

By improving the state of this path, we would not only be protecting our community but also promoting a healthy, active lifestyle for our children. It's time for our local government to step in and promote the safety of our children and families. By signing this petition, you can contribute to ensuring a safer, better path for our students and parents. Please sign to urge the repavement of our walking pathway now.
