The Issue

It has been a deeply painful journey for our family, as the remains of our beloved one  Jermaine  Richards  were held by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office for an agonizing two years and three months. This unbearable delay was caused by the lack of a streamlined system for identifying unclaimed bodies and cross-referencing their identities with existing databases. Such inefficiencies not only leave families like ours in prolonged heartache but also hinder the overall operations of the medical examiner’s office.

Imagine the collective grief families endure simply because there is no system in place to quickly and effectively match remains with missing persons reports or other identification modalities. Every extra day counts when it comes to closure and healing for families waiting for answers.

The solution is clear: the Cook County Medical Examiner's office must implement a robust system for identification and database cross-referencing. By employing modern technologies and collaborating with national databases, we can ensure that unidentified remains are processed much more swiftly. Leveraging resources such as NamUs (National Missing and Unidentified Persons System) and other forensic databases will expedite this process, allowing families to find their loved ones sooner.

Moreover, investing in DNA analysis and fingerprinting technologies could further enhance identification processes and aid in tracking missing persons more effectively. Other counties have already seen success with similar systems, resulting in quicker resolutions and reduced emotional strain on families.

It’s imperative for the county and state authorities to allocate necessary funding and resources for this initiative, as it holds the potential to transform the protocols of handling unidentified remains, ensuring dignity for the deceased and peace of mind for the living.

We call on the Cook County officials to immediately prioritize the establishment of an efficient cross-referencing system to prevent protracted periods of waiting and uncertainty for grieving families. For the sake of avoiding prolonged anguish and providing timely closure to countless families, we urge you to take action now.

Please sign this petition to demand that Cook County implement an identification and database cross-referencing system in the Medical Examiner's office. Let's give families the resolution they deserve in a timely manner.
