Implement Humane Control and Care for Free-Roaming Cats at Sandy Beach, Hawaii

The Issue

My daughter and I were deeply moved when we saw a cat begging a tourist from Japan for food at Sandy Beach in Hawaii. We soon discovered that this was not an isolated case - there was a group of feral cats trying to survive on this beach, abandoned or lost. Many were unhealthy, hungry, and injured. Their only source of food were the garbage bins or litter left by beachgoers.

The situation is dire and calls for immediate action. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates that there are about 70 million stray cats in the U.S., many suffering from malnutrition and disease. This issue extends beyond just our local community in Hawaii Kai; it's a nationwide concern.

We propose reducing and maintaining the population of free-roaming cats at Sandy Beach through humane means such as Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), feeding programs, rescue initiatives, and rehoming efforts. TNR has been proven effective in controlling feral cat populations without causing harm to the animals according to studies by Alley Cat Allies.

These strategies will not only improve the lives of these innocent creatures but also contribute towards creating a cleaner environment on our beloved beaches.

We urge you to join us in advocating for these voiceless beings who deserve better care than scavenging from trash bins. Please sign this petition urging Honolulu authorities to implement humane control measures for free-roaming cats at Sandy Beach.
