My husband and I have lived in Nassau County, NY for decades. He recently retired after 32 years of service with the FDNY, and we've been looking forward to traveling together. However, our dreams are hindered by an archaic law that leaves homeowners like us vulnerable to squatters. We live in constant fear of leaving our home unattended because the current law is on the side of squatters.

There have been horrifying news stories about homeowners being killed by squatters when they return from vacation or even a weekend visit to family. This is not just about losing worldly possessions; it's about risking lives due to an unfair law that essentially allows stealing.

In Florida, House Bill 621 gives police the ability to immediately evict squatters from homeowners' property. We need a similar bill here in New York. The implementation of such a bill would provide peace of mind for countless homeowners who wish to travel without fearing for their safety or their homes.

We urge lawmakers in New York State Legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul's office to consider implementing legislation equivalent to Florida's House Bill 621, ensuring immediate eviction rights against squatters on private properties.
