The issue

When my daughter, Jayde, was 17, her life began an alarming descent. It wasn’t until her third suicide attempt that she was finally allowed access to help, the journey towards recovery was anything but easy. A few years later, things continued to spiral and, despite the urgency of her condition, Jayde was repeatedly told that she was 'too complex' for support services. If there had been a suicide attempt in the previous three months, assistance was outright denied. The hospitals would temporarily keep her safe, administer a cocktail of medications, and send her home without any long-term support.

This heartbreaking experience isn't unique. It's a reflection of a systematic failure within our healthcare system, where mental health funds lag significantly behind other medical needs. Mental health touches the lives of everyone, yet it remains the least understood and the most poorly managed area of healthcare. Current funding disparities hinder effective treatment, perpetuating misunderstandings and stigma, and create a fragmented system where services are disjointed and inconsistent, and patients like Jayde fall through the cracks.

To address this, we urgently need a unified approach that facilitates communication and collaboration across all services. By seamlessly integrating medical and mental health treatments, we can bridge the gap that currently exists between them. We are calling on Governments to implement legislative changes that create a cohesive and holistic healthcare framework. This framework should prioritise both the physical and mental wellness of individuals, ensuring no one is denied care. A framework that also supports mental health prevention and early engagement, showing an understanding of complex human needs.

Furthermore, education and training for healthcare providers must be enhanced, equipping them with the tools needed to address mental health issues effectively and empathetically. Only then can we foster an environment where people with mental health needs are met with understanding and support rather than barriers and rejection.

Join us in urging policymakers to enact these crucial changes for the betterment of mental health care. Sign this petition to help transform the lives of millions who deserve timely and compassionate care, just like Jayde does. Your signature can make a difference.
