Implement Healthy Food Options in Prisons Nationwide

Implement Healthy Food Options in Prisons Nationwide
The Issue
My son, a non-violent offender serving two years for selling marijuana, has always been a healthy eater. Since his incarceration, this is no longer an option for him. The importance of food to overall health cannot be overstated - it affects our mind, body, and soul. Yet prisoners are deprived of this basic necessity.
In prisons across the country, inmates are surviving on diets that consist mainly of bologna sandwiches and Ramen noodles - meals that lack the essential nutrients required for good health and rehabilitation. How can we expect individuals to positively rehabilitate when their dietary needs are not met?
According to the American Journal of Public Health, poor nutrition can lead to numerous health problems including obesity and heart disease (AJPH 2017). Moreover, research shows that diet also impacts mental health significantly (Mental Health Foundation 2016). It's clear then that our current prison food system is not only detrimental to physical wellbeing but also hinders effective rehabilitation.
We need a change in policy that ensures all prisoners have access to healthy food options. This will not only improve their physical health but also support their mental wellbeing and aid in their rehabilitation process.
In Jesus' name I urge you all - sign this petition today! Let's demand better nutritional standards in our prisons nationwide!
