Implement Health-Care Rights for Aboriginal People in Canada
The Issue
Despite being the original inhabitants of Canada, Aboriginal people face significant health disparities compared to non-Aboriginal Canadians. According to the 2016 Canadian Census, there are over 1.67 million Aboriginal people in Canada, representing about 4.9% of the national population (Statistics Canada). Yet, they experience higher rates of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease (Public Health Agency of Canada). This is a clear indication that their health-care rights are not being adequately recognized or implemented.
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples states that indigenous individuals have an equal right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. This declaration was endorsed by Canada in 2016 but has yet to be fully realized for its indigenous population.
We call upon our government and health authorities to recognize and implement these rights for Aboriginal people in line with international standards. It's time we ensure equitable access to quality healthcare services for all citizens regardless of their ethnic background.
Please sign this petition if you believe in equal healthcare rights for everyone living in our country!
