Our society considers the protection of children from any harm, especially sexual exploitation, as one of its prime responsibilities. Despite this fact, the sentences and penalties for sexual offenders, including those who prey on children, are often not harsh enough to adequately discourage this appalling behavior. According to the U.S Department of Justice, approximately 60% of sexual offenders are sentenced to prison, with a median length of incarceration of approximately 4 years. Given the disturbing nature and long-lasting harmful impacts of these offences, campaigns nationwide are calling for an increase in sentences for these crimes.
