Implement Gun-Safety Curriculum in Texas Schools

Implement Gun-Safety Curriculum in Texas Schools
The Issue
Our family recently experienced the fear and heartbreak of gun violence when my teenage nephew was shot. He survived, but the shock reminded us how quickly a life can change. We don’t want any other family to face the same terror. We believe education—teaching kids what to do if they encounter a firearm and how to stay safe—can save lives.
It's time to prioritize the safety of our children by incorporating a gun-safety curriculum in Texas public middle and high schools. This curriculum should be taught by certified instructors with a focus on safety, not politics. Lessons should include essential knowledge such as safe storage of firearms, steps students should take if they come across an unsecured firearm, and how to seek help in dangerous situations.
The curriculum must be designed in collaboration with reputable organizations including public health experts, firearm-safety educators, and community leaders. This approach ensures that the lessons are age-appropriate, evidence-based, and respectful of diverse perspectives.
In Texas, where firearm ownership is a significant cultural aspect, many households have guns, making it crucial for young people to understand how to be around them safely. Statistics show that more than 4.6 million children in the United States live in homes with at least one loaded, unlocked firearm, according to a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Teaching our children about gun safety is not a political stance but a practical measure to ensure their well-being. By instilling this knowledge at a young age, we can prevent unnecessary tragedies, reduce the risk of accidental shootings, and empower our students to make informed and safe choices.
We urge state education officials and lawmakers to take decisive action and implement a comprehensive gun-safety curriculum in Texas schools for the safety and future of our children. Please sign this petition to demand change and protect our youth from the dangers of gun violence.
