Dr. Melissa N. Ortega is a member of the Texas State Board of Education, representing District 1 as a Democrat since November 2022. A dedicated educator, she holds a Ph.D. in Teaching, Learning, and Culture, along with a Master's degree in Education and a Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Melissa has extensive experience teaching at various educational levels, including elementary, secondary, and college students. She is committed to advocating for public education, particularly opposing the expansion of charter schools and promoting equitable funding for public schools. As a first-generation college graduate and Latina Native American woman, she emphasizes diversity and inclusion in education. Melissa is not seeking reelection in 2024
