Implement Ground Floor ADA Compliant Restroom in Arcadia Vons for Employees
The Issue
I am an employee at the Arcadia Vons, and like many of my colleagues, I am mobility impaired. Our current employee restroom is only accessible by a set of stairs on the second floor, presenting a daily challenge for myself and my co-workers who, like me, have conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS). With our store currently undergoing a remodel, this is an opportune time to address this issue.
We propose that the plans for the remodel include installing an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant restroom on the ground floor, specifically in the back to cater to outside department staff. Not only is this practical, it is feasible. We have a stockroom with a sink, which stands as a proof that the store isn't devoid of plumbing infrastructure that can facilitate the addition of this restroom.
Accessing the restroom should not be a daunting task for us. With this remodel, we urge the management of Vons to make a conscious decision to promote inclusivity and dignity for all staff regardless of their physical abilities. Furthermore, having an ADA compliant restroom will not only cater to the current staff but, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 61 million adults in the United States live with a disability, so it positions the store as a friendly place for future employees too.
Our store may be large, but it should not be difficult for its employees to navigate, especially for those of us with limited mobility. Having a restroom located at a considerable distance is more than inconvenient; it's discriminatory and devalues the contributions we give to make the store run smoothly every day. It's crucial that we make every effort to equip our workplace with the necessary facilities to comfortably accommodate all our staff. We ask you to join us in advocating for an ADA compliant restroom for us, the employees of Arcadia Vons. Please, sign our petition.
