Implement Full Disclosure of Shelter Animals' Histories Before Adoption

Implement Full Disclosure of Shelter Animals' Histories Before Adoption
The Issue
As an animal lover and attempted adopter in Harrisburg, PA, I believe strongly that those who choose to adopt pets deserve the right to know the full history of the animals they're bringing home. At present, crucial information about potential pets' breed, anticipated size, health history, and any history of aggression or biting is often withheld. This is not only detrimental to potential adopters, but it can also put the animals themselves in a precarious situation.
The connection between a pet and its adopter is a unique bond that demands trust and understanding. It is unfair and problematic to withhold such vital information from potential pet owners, without which they may not be able to provide the best possible care or environment suited to the animal involved.
It's worth considering that around 6.5 million pets enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats), according to the ASPCA. We want these loving animals to find their forever homes and be treated with the care and respect they deserve.
We believe that enforcing a policy of full disclosure for each animal in Harrisburg's shelters will help build a better trust relationship between shelters and adopters. Such a strategy could also potentially alleviate some issues related to either animal or human safety after the adoption takes place.
We are not suggesting that these animals are flawed or undesirable, but that they deserve homes that are fully equipped to handle their unique needs and backgrounds- and potential pet owners armed with all the necessary information to foster such homes for them.
Therefore, we are calling upon Harrisburg's local government and animal shelters to take necessary actions to ensure all known or highly suspected vital information is made available to every potential pet owner during the adoption process. Will you join our cause? If so, please sign this petition to help create a safer and more informed process for adopters and their furry friends.
