The Issue

Globally, over 1 billion meals are wasted every day, which translates to approximately 1.05 billion tonnes of food waste generated annually. According to a 2024 UNEP report, roughly 30-40% of all the food produced is lost or wasted, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. This problem is personal to me because I see it first-hand every day at school. Our school lunches always include a fruit, but many students simply discard it, leading to a staggering amount of waste.

Instead of throwing away this perfectly good food, we should adopt a system to collect and redistribute it to those in need. Let's create designated boxes at schools where students can place unwanted fruits or other food items. These donations could then be transported to nearby homeless shelters or outreach programs. This simple yet effective approach not only addresses food waste but also provides much-needed resources to vulnerable communities.

Implementing this system will not just reduce waste but also help combat climate change. Reducing food waste decreases the environmental impact, as decomposing food in landfills releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By diverting food from the trash, schools contribute positively to their local environment and demonstrate an actionable commitment to sustainability.

Homeless shelters constantly face a shortage of food supplies, and every piece of fruit or surplus lunch item can make a difference in someone's life. Our schools have the opportunity to become beacons of hope and sustainability by turning waste into nourishment and reducing their environmental footprint.
