I am voicing out a personal concern that has bothered me for so long. Everyday on my commute along I-294, I witness the blatant disobedience of truck drivers to the traffic laws and signs that are posted every few feet. The left 2 lanes are specifically designated for passenger cars and SUVs, however, they are frequently occupied by overly large trucks and semi-trucks. This not only disrupts the flow of traffic but also poses significant safety risks. Furthermore, law enforcement, specifically State Troopers, appear to be unresponsive to this ongoing issue.

According to Illinois Department of Transportation data, traffic accidents involving large trucks killed over 100 motorists in 2018 alone. We believe that the enforcement of laws regulating large trucks on highways can significantly reduce this statistic, therefore saving multitude of lives every year. By implementing and enforcing the use of flashers on truck driver signs along I-294, we are taking a step towards stronger compliance with road rules and increased roadway safety.

The dangers posed by the current situation are grave, manifesting not only in the risk to lives but also in increased congestion and traffic delays. Our appeal is for relevant authorities to take immediate and effective actions by installing flashers on the truck driver signs along I-294. These glaring reminders will serve as a stricter imposition of the law, thereby ensuring that our highways are not lawlessly dominated by large trucks.
