Implement fines for walking dogs in extreme heat

The Issue

Excessive heat poses a severe threat to the well-being of our beloved pets, particularly dogs. Every summer, veterinarians see a rise in cases of heatstroke, which can lead to severe injury or death in pets exposed to high temperatures. Studies reveal that temperatures as low as 20°C (68°F) can create dangerous conditions for dogs, with the risk escalating sharply as temperatures rise.

Kent County Council must take immediate action to protect animal welfare by introducing fines and restrictions on walking dogs in

dangerously hot weather. This proposal is not only about implementing penalties but about raising awareness of the risks associated with walking dogs in extreme heat and encouraging responsible pet ownership.

Setting a clear threshold, such as 25°C (77°F), as the temperature beyond which fines could be applied will help in clearly communicating the guidelines to pet owners. These fines would act as a deterrent, encouraging people to reconsider taking their dogs out during the hottest parts of the day.

Moreover, the implementation of public information campaigns will highlight the signs of heatstroke in pets, the dangers of walking dogs on hot pavements, and tips on how owners can ensure their pets remain protected during summer months.

These measures aim not to punish pet owners, but to cultivate a community that values and understands animal safety. Kent County Council is in a position to set a precedent for other councils by adopting these necessary protections for animals.

Your support for this petition could lead to significant positive changes for our four-legged friends. Our pets depend on us for their protection. Help us call on Kent County Council to act now in preventing unnecessary suffering and protecting our animals. Please sign and share this petition to make a real difference.
