Implement Financial Education in British Columbia High Schools

The Issue

I, like many other young adults in British Columbia, graduated from high school without any formal financial education. This lack of knowledge has left us unprepared for the real world where we are expected to manage our finances responsibly.

In Canada, there is no requirement for financial education to be taught at any level. This leaves a majority of students unequipped with the necessary skills to navigate their financial futures. It has led to the average Canadian reporting $20,000 of debt.

Financial literacy is not just about understanding how to balance a chequebook or create a budget. It's about understanding how money works - how to save it, invest it and manage debt. It's an essential life skill that should be taught early on.

By implementing financial education into the curriculum of high schools across British Columbia, we can empower our youth with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their personal finances.

We urge the Ministry of Education in British Columbia to incorporate comprehensive financial education into high school curriculum's. Let's equip our future generations with the tools they need for successful financial management.

Having worked with the safe schools department in surrey the last 3 years as well as attending a high school in East Vancouver I have seen first hand the effects the poverty cycle can have on generations of Canadians. The only way to break this is to educate the next generation so they can make better financial decisions.
