Implement Equal Parental Leave and Maternal Leave Pay Nationwide
The Issue
My brother and his wife recently had a baby. Despite the joy of welcoming a new life, they faced an unfair reality - my brother was only granted two weeks of leave. This is not enough time for any parent to bond with their newborn, especially when considering that the first three months are crucial to a child's development. The nurturing love from both parents is essential for children to grow up in safe, loving environments.
This personal experience has highlighted the need for nationwide implementation of the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Currently, this law is not enforced in every state across The United States. It's time we change that.
The FMLA provides equal parental leave and pay for both men and women after having a baby - promoting gender equality while ensuring that families can provide their children with the best possible start in life. However, without nationwide enforcement, many families are left struggling during these critical early months.
"The FMLA allows eligible employees to take up to 12 work weeks of unpaid leave during any 12-month period to care for a new child." (2024).
According to Pew Research Center (2017), only 14% of US workers have access to paid family leave through their employers. This statistic underscores how vital it is that we push for change now.
We believe implementing FMLA nationwide could be an important step towards achieving gender equality by ensuring both men and women have equal opportunities to raise their children without undue financial or emotional stress.
