Implement Elliott's Law: Compulsory Non-Verbal Communication Tools for First Responders
The Issue
My son is a nonverbal child who relies heavily on an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device to express himself. However, in an emergency scenario, he might struggle to navigate through the wide array of words on his device to effectively convey his needs. This personal experience enhances the urgent need to campaign for the implementation of Elliott's Law.
This law proposes a mandatory requirement for all first responders to carry an alternative form of communication, such as an emergency communication board, harboring only emergency-related words. Not only for non-verbal individuals but also for those with limited verbal ability. It ensures that they receive accurate assistance without delay in emergency situations when every second counts.
According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, at least two million people in the U.S. depend on augmentative and alternative communication methods, exhibiting the pressing relevance of this initiative. (ASHA, 2019)
This change can drastically enhance the efficiency of emergency responses and potentially save lives. Not a step toward exclusivity, but toward inclusivity and safety. It’s time we advocate for those who find it difficult to do the same for themselves. Please sign this petition to help advocate for Elliott's Law, ensuring swift and efficient communication during emergencies for all.
