Implement Effective Speed Deterrents on Gorge Road for Community Safety

Implement Effective Speed Deterrents on Gorge Road for Community Safety
The issue
In July 2023, a speeding car crashed into our home on Gorge Road, Paradise, causing extensive damage and upending our lives. This wasn't an isolated incident; at least four similar accidents and near-misses have occurred in the same area within a year, and many more have been reported to the Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT), South Australia Police (SAPOL), and the local council. Despite these reports, the recent 'safety measures' failed to prevent another vehicle from veering off the road as recently as 15 March 2024. This latest incident, the first since the new measures were implemented, clearly demonstrates their ineffectiveness.
It's clear that immediate, effective action is needed to ensure the safety of our community.
We demand a comprehensive approach, including a feasibility study or the immediate installation of fixed speed cameras or other speed deterrents, like roundabouts, as well as safety barriers. Speed is a factor in roughly one-third of all fatal road crashes in Australia; implementing these measures could drastically reduce the likelihood of such tragedies on Gorge Road.
This situation affects every resident, visitor, and commuter on Gorge Road. Adequate speed control measures and safety barriers are essential to protect not just property but, more importantly, the lives of pedestrians and drivers.
We call on DIT and SAPOL to prioritize our community's safety now, before we're forced to mourn unnecessary losses due to preventable accidents.
Your signature supports our plea for a safer Gorge Road. Please sign this petition to urge our authorities to take meaningful action against the dangers of reckless driving in our neighbourhood.
