Implement Dynamic Pricing in Target

The Issue

This petition is a call to action for Target and their Chief Marketing Officer, Lisa Roath, to start using dynamic pricing in stores nationwide. The price of groceries all around the U.S have skyrocketed in recent years, which has made low income families and even college students rethink what they can afford when making their grocery lists. The average price for a dozen large eggs, for example, has nearly doubled from four years ago, to $2.72 from $1.55. As a college student myself, I have noticed the increase in daily items. I will walk out of Target spending $50 dollars on about 4 food items. Some may say “I haven’t noticed the change, so why should I care?”, but the overpricing of food is a national public health issue. Approximately 44.2 million Americans face food insecurity in 2022, which was about a 45 percent jump from 2021. The likelihood you know someone who has experienced food insecurity is high. When low-income families or individuals have to choose between putting healthy food on the table or rent, they will choose rent. This decision leads to them choosing foods that are cheap, which tend to be less nutritional. The lack of nutrition in their diets can lead to higher chances to develop Type 2 diabetes and other chronic illnesses.

Since this issue is widely unrecognized, I started to research how we as a whole community could get Target to change their pricing to benefit low-income families and individuals. Through this research I discovered dynamic pricing which is when a company, or grocery store in this case, decreases the price as the product gets closer to its expiration date. Considering that lower prices can help meet peoples' economic needs and reduce food waste from grocery retailers by 21 percent, dynamic pricing seems to be a win for both parties. I believe that Target and Lisa Roth can help lessen the food disparities around the country by instilling the practice of dynamic pricing, because it will benefit Target and the low-income communities near Targets.
