The Issue

As a resident living in a sheltered housing complex, my life and the lives of my neighbors, many of whom are old and disabled, are fraught with challenges. Our complex lacks disabled parking spaces and even adequate parking in general. This poses significant safety and accessibility concerns. Per World Health Organization, about 15% of the world’s population lives with some form of disability, a number that increases significantly with age. In our housing complex, a place supposed to be a refuge for older and disabled individuals, the lack of disabled parking is a glaring oversight. Disabled residents are thus forced into precarious positions — parking far away and having to navigate potentially dangerous paths to reach their accommodation. Having disabled parking in our vicinity is not a luxury; it is a fundamental necessity to ensure the independence and dignity of every resident. We urgently call upon the management of our sheltered housing complex to create designated disabled parking spaces in compliance with the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We, the residents and supporters, believe this is a crucial step in improving the safety and living conditions of the elderly and disabled individuals residing in sheltered housing. Please sign the petition to support our goal.
