As a concerned parent of a student at Barry and June Gunderson Middle school and resident of Las Vegas, NV, I am deeply troubled by the increasing number of accidents involving students being struck by vehicles on their way to school. It is with great urgency that I start this petition to address the critical need for crossing guards in our community.

In just the first quarter of this school year alone, we have witnessed several tragic incidents where innocent children have been hit by cars while walking or riding their bikes to school. These accidents are not only devastating for the families involved but also serve as a stark reminder that our current infrastructure fails to prioritize student safety.

It is unacceptable that our children are forced to navigate through heavy traffic without proper assistance during school hours. The absence of traffic lights or crossing guards exacerbates an already dangerous situation and puts countless lives at risk every day.

To ensure the safety and well-being of our students, it is imperative that we take immediate action. By implementing crossing guards at key intersections near our school,  we can significantly reduce the chances of accidents occurring and provide peace of mind for parents and guardians.

According to studies conducted by reputable organizations such as Safe Kids Worldwide (safekids.org), having crossing guards present has proven effective in reducing pedestrian-related injuries among children. Their presence not only helps regulate traffic flow but also encourages drivers to slow down and be more cautious when approaching designated crosswalks.
