Implement Coyote Management and Eradication Policy in Newport Beach

The Issue

I, Denise Bubonic. a resident of Newport Beach, experienced a traumatic incident on December 4, 2024. I was walking my dog on a leash at Eastbluff Park at 2:00 in the afternoon. To my horror, a large coyote burst from the bushes, aiming to snatch my beloved pet. Despite screaming, striking at it with my cane, reinjuring my foot in the process, and trying desperately to shield my dog, the coyote was undeterred. It is this harrowing face-to-face encounter with a bold and uncaring predator that brings me to you today.

Our city is under an escalating threat from coyotes. They are multiplying exponentially due to lack of natural predators like bears and mountain lions. These coyotes are increasingly bold, threatening our safety, and tragically, our pets are their most frequent targets. This is causing distress and heartbreak to many in our community who have lost their cherished companions.

The current City of Newport Beach policies and budget do not include an adequate approach to this issue, which is why we propose a new policy — one that involves the implementation of skilled trappers and a budget allocation for an eradication program. Elsewhere, such initiatives have proved effective in reducing the threat from coyotes.

Action needs to be taken now. We cannot live in fear, and our pets should not be prey, in our homes and parks. It's time to prioritize the safety of residents and their pets in Newport Beach. Sign this petition to appeal to the City of Newport Beach to modify their policies and allocate appropriate funding for adopting a comprehensive coyote management and eradication program.
