The Issue

As the owner of a sanctuary and rescue, I witness firsthand the challenges that arise from the overpopulation of feral cats and stray dogs. Our facility remains at capacity, overflowing with animals that deserve a chance at a better life. This issue is not just about finding homes for these animals; it's about addressing the root causes of overpopulation and ensuring we treat our animals with the dignity and care they deserve.

The solution lies in a county-funded Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program. TNR is a humane method to effectively manage and reduce stray and feral animal populations. By trapping, neutering, and returning feral cats to their colonies, we can significantly decrease their population over time without resorting to inhumane methods. Furthermore, these programs are instrumental in controlling the spread of diseases that can affect both animal colonies and pets owned by families.

Funding TNR initiatives will not only stem the tide of feral and stray animal growth but also promote public health and safety. Fewer animals roaming the streets will lead to decreased interactions that could result in bites or the transmission of diseases such as rabies and feline immunodeficiency virus. Additionally, it helps allocate resources more efficiently, saving taxpayer money in the long run by reducing the need for animal control services and public health interventions.

Many communities across the nation have adopted similar programs with proven success. For example, in Jacksonville, Florida, their TNR program led to a 47% decrease in the shelter intake of cats. Imagine the positive impact that a similar initiative could have in our community.

Our aspiration is straightforward: to secure enough funds to rigorously implement and sustain a TNR program, ensuring both the well-being of animals and the community at large. Let us not ignore the plight of these animals or the responsibility we hold to care for them. Working together, we can forge a future where feral population control is managed humanely and effectively.

Please join me in urging the local government to allocate funding for a county-wide TNR program. Sign this petition and be part of a transformative movement that not only respects animal lives but also prioritizes the health and safety of our community. Together, we can make a difference.
