The Issue

I am a believer, living in Illinois who, like many others, has a loved one behind bars. My religious rights to consummate and have conjugal visits with my husband are presently hindered by the current prison policies in our state.

The ability for incarcerated individuals to maintain strong familial ties has been proven to significantly reduce recidivism rates. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, family contact during incarceration is associated with improved post-release outcomes and reduced disciplinary infractions while in prison. Despite this, Illinois is one of the majority of U.S. states which does not allow conjugal visits, isolating inmates from this vital form of emotional support.

It is essential to also recognize that conjugal visits are not just about physical intimacy. They provide a momentary escape from the harsh reality of imprisonment, reinforcing familial bonds and offering inmates a vision of their life post-incarceration, which can positively influence their behavior when they are released.

Regardless of their crimes, prisoners are still people who deserve human rights and dignity. Conjugal visits are part of that dignity, and the right to private life should not be abandoned at the prison gates. We urge lawmakers and prison officials in Illinois to reconsider the current policy and allow conjugal visits in our prison system.

Please, sign this petition and join us in standing for the rights of incarcerated individuals to maintain their family ties and to promote successful reintegration into society upon their release.
