Implement “Children at Play Signs” and Speed Bumps in Our Neighborhood

The Issue

A devastating event recently rocked our community: a child was struck by a speeding car that failed to pay attention to children playing in our neighborhood. This accident was not just avoidable but is another warning cry in an issue that has been increasingly prominent and ignored. Our quiet streets are being transformed into danger zones due to a rise in drivers who speed and don’t pay attention in residential areas.

Approximately 12,175 children are injured each year in auto-related accidents (Safe Kids Worldwide, 2019). In our neighborhood alone, anecdotal evidence indicates a marked increase in cars speeding and close calls over the last few months. The "Children at Play" signs we are asking for demonstrably reduce the likelihood of accidents, with studies showing that visual cues such as these can decrease speeding by up to 14% (Institute of Transportation Engineers, 2013).

Speed bumps are another vital implement that enhance children's safety as they play outside. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS, 2020), speed bumps can reduce auto-related pedestrian injuries by up to 40%.

We ask our local authorities to ensure the safety of our most vulnerable residents by fulfilling the following: First, require the installation of visible "Children at Play" signs in our neighborhood. Second, install speed bumps in areas identified as high traffic or where children regularly play. Let's prevent further avoidable tragedies and maintain the peace, safety, and familiarity of our neighborhood.

It's time to take action to protect our children. Please sign and share this petition today.
